the roode legend

Johann Roode bought the land on which Kapama stands with the intention of grazing cattle on the rich grasslands. However, he soon realised that doing so would disrupt the local ecosystem and have far-reaching effects on its future.

He began to develop Kapama into an ecotourism destination dedicated to the celebration and preservation of this breathtaking region. Today, Kapama is still owner-managed by the Roode family, making it the largest family-owned reserve in the area.

a tale to tell

According to local legend, Shangaan chiefs who demonstrated acts of extreme bravery were honoured by being reborn as lions. Kapama was the name of the last chief of this revered bloodline.

It is said that if you look deep enough into the eyes of the lions of Kapama, you can see past the beast and into the soul of a Shangaan chief.

Discerning travellers can now – on request – fly directly between Cape Town International or OR Tambo International and Kapama’s private airfield. Guests making use of this service will have access to the exclusive Fireblade facilities at ORTIA that includes a gym, day rooms, boardrooms, and more. Similarly, guests flying in from Cape Town will have access to Signature Flight Services’ facilities. Flights from Johannesburg take only 50 minutes, and flights from Cape Town around 2 hours 45 minutes.
