a tale to tell
Johann began to develop Kapama into an ecotourism destination dedicated to the celebration and preservation of this breathtaking region with construction starting in 1989. Buffalo Camp now stands on the land that used to be Moria, and River Lodge is on the former Drakensig.
Today, Kapama is still owner-managed by the Roode family, making it the largest family-owned reserve in the area. After Johann’s tragic passing in 2002 his wife, Lente Roode, and their two children, Bernard and Adine, took over the management and development of Kapama. Bernard has since further expanded the land through the acquisition of most significantly Gwala Gwala and Hongonyi. These two portions of land are now the sites of the modern Southern Camp and the luxurious Karula.
